Clair Obscur Spoilers Present

CHARACTER INFO

Character: Maelle / Alicia Dessendre
Canon: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | Maelle Ending
Age: 16x2

Background Information: From the Wiki

Personality:

Note: I use both of her names within the app. This is to help distinguish the differences between Maelle within the canvas and Alicia in the real world as they have a lot of conflicting personality traits yet are absolutely the same person. In the case of her canonpoint, she is more Maelle, with Alicia being more memory than a significant part of her.

1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.

Maelle is known for being terrible at dealing with people, preferring Gestrals and non-humanoids over other humans. She is someone who will talk with you if she wants to talk with you. This, however, doesn’t mean she’s unfriendly but simply inexperienced at dealing with people she doesn’t know very well. Verso describes her as nervous but eager, and that likely is what one might expect when meeting her for the first time.

But despite whatever apprehensions she might have toward someone at first, she is easily trusting of others and can quickly warm up to people. It doesn’t take long for her more arrogant and sassy side to poke through.

2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?

In the beginning of the game, Maelle joins Expedition 33 despite Gustave and Emma pleading for her not to go. At 16 with 9 years to live, it seems like a waste as Expeditions typically mean certain death. But Maelle’s goal is hardly the expedition at all, but instead a chance to explore, see the world and find a place where she belongs.

Within Act 2, her motivations shift. With Gustave’s death she’s instead motivated by revenge. The “mission” was never her priority but now she has more reason to follow through with it. Although she doesn’t hold any large obsessions over it, she is determined to kill Renoir. Alongside her ambition to kill Renoir also comes her ambition to kill the Paintress. She wants to succeed in the Expedition for Gustave, so that his life and loss mean something.

However, at her current canon point and having accomplished the goals above, her driving force is to recreate the people of Lumiere and rebuild.

Although Maelle claims responsibility for the people of Lumiere Gommaging after defeating the Paintress, she is not entirely offering to rebuild out of the goodness of her heart. In reality, Maelle is doing it out of an act of selfishness and desperation. Within the canvas, her face is intact, she can talk and breathe without pain, and she can hide away from the consequences and survivor’s guilt of her actions in the real world. She’s desperate to stay in the canvas because she can paint a whole life however she wants and live with the people she wants in that life. She is also convinced that she won’t be like her mother, the Paintress, that her health won’t be at risk and she’ll know when it’s time to leave. But in actuality, staying will kill her and it’s only a matter of time.

3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?

Alicia’s biggest regret is Verso’s death. It’s not exactly clear what happened, but what is brought up multiple times is that Alicia trusted the Writers’ Guild, despite warnings not to. After her trusting them, there was a house fire that left her trapped inside, her brother Verso rushed in to save her but at the cost of his own life. Because of this, Alicia is frequently blamed by both her sister Clea and her mother Aline for Verso’s death. While Clea seems to “love and hate” Verso for saving their baby sister, Aline refuses to look or speak to Alicia. Alicia didn’t get out of the fire unscathed, her face is badly scarred, she lost an eye and her voice to the fire and she mentions that it’s painful to breathe. Her face alone is a constant reminder of her mistake and to Aline it is a constant reminder of her dead son and damaged daughter.

That all being said, Alicia’s flaw can be seen as her habit of trusting others and her naivete. She has a habit of assuming the fire can’t touch her (pun absolutely intended, ty) and that’s clear from her trusting the Writers despite warnings to the contrary. It’s not the only time she does this. Despite Gustave and Emma pleading for Maelle not to join the Expedition, she ignores them thinking she’ll be fine and anything is better than Lumiere. She does the same later when Verso and Renoir plead for her to leave the canvas. Again, she doesn’t think the consequences will come for her, that she’ll be different from her mother and know when to leave the canvas and that it won’t kill her. In both instances, she demonstrates reckless and self-destructive behavior in her stubbornness and arrogance that somehow she’ll be different and consequences won’t come for her.

4) Optional:

Abilities & Inventory:
Out of the Canvas
(All of this is nerfed, but I’m referencing it anyway)
Alicia is a Paintress and as such she is capable of creating living, breathing worlds with living, breathing people. She is also capable of entering these worlds and living inside amongst her creations.

Inside the Canvas
(Much nerf, such problem, many broken, wow)
Maelle is capable of creating, recreating and literally deleting entire people. With a flick of her rapier and some pure chroma she can make whole people so long as she understands the essence of her creations. Although it’s barely practiced, it’s implied that she’s also figured out painted!Alicia’s ability to control time by stopping and moving through it alongside those of her choosing while others are frozen.

Her gradient attacks range from heavy hits, to resurrecting allies, to erasing or Gommaging her opponents.

Remaining Abilities
Maelle also has an affinity to fire and void elements. She can rain fiery swords onto opponents or coat her rapier with flame to leave stacks and stacks of burning DoTs. While I don’t think her void abilities would be appropriate in the setting, I think her fire attacks could be something that she could gain through the magic system in the setting.

As for her Inventory:
️‍🔥 A rapier (Technically “summonable”, so to speak)
️‍🔥 Gustave’s Journal

ARMADA SELECTION

Corsairs
I think Maelle would best fit Corsairs because she is known for leaping before she looks. She can be cocky, selfish and reckless, and her goals tend to align with exploring for the sake of it rather than anything thought out or methodical.
